Why I Chose Fashion Design as a Career
From a young age, creativity has been a cornerstone of my personality. I loved drawing, crafting, and letting my imagination run wild. These interests naturally led me to textiles when I was in Year Eight. I was fortunate to have an excellent teacher who inspired me to develop my skills and confidence. Hearing that I was talented at it and receiving good grades motivated me further.

A pivotal moment in my journey was when my nan gifted me her vintage 1970s Singer sewing machine. Even now, I treasure and use it for personal projects. This early connection to sewing and design fuelled my passion, prompting me to pursue fashion design in college. I dedicated two years to studying fashion at college, followed by three years at university, where I graduated with a fashion design degree at university for the creative arts in 2010. Looking back, I can’t imagine doing anything else—it feels like my career was always meant to be in fashion.
What I Love About Being a Fashion Designer
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a freelance fashion designer is the sheer variety. No two weeks are ever the same. I’ve had the privilege of designing for an array of brands, ranging from high-energy women’s fast fashion to playful kidswear. I’ve worked with start-ups carving out their niche, established high-street retailers, and trendy lifestyle brands.
This constant change keeps my work exciting and challenges me to think outside the box. Each brand brings a unique identity, voice, and audience, making every project feel fresh and inspiring. I thrive on this versatility, and the learning never stops. Every client and collection teaches me something new, whether it’s about trends, techniques, or connecting with a target market.

Finding Inspiration in Design
When I begin designing, the brand always serves as my first source of inspiration. Each one has its identity, values, and customer base, which I must thoroughly understand before putting pen to paper. I research their history, visual aesthetics, and customer preferences to ensure the designs align perfectly with their ethos.
From there, I immerse myself in trend research. I use a variety of tools to gather ideas and forecast upcoming styles. Platforms like Pinterest and Instagram are invaluable for spotting emerging trends. Competitor websites, fashion week coverage on Vogue, and even trend forecasting software help paint a clear picture of what’s in demand. I’ll also take occasional trips to retail shops to observe what’s catching consumers’ eyes and snap photos for inspiration.
This research-driven process allows me to tailor my designs for the specific season and market I’m working on. Whether it’s Spring/Summer or Autumn/Winter, staying informed ensures that my creations feel both relevant and innovative.
Key Skills for Success in Fashion Design
The fashion industry is as demanding as it is rewarding, and certain skills are essential for success. Creativity and innovation are at the top of the list. A designer must have a sharp eye for detail and the ability to translate ideas into tangible, wearable pieces.
Equally important is resilience. The fashion world is highly competitive, and it takes thick skin to navigate criticism, tight deadlines, and the fast-paced nature of the business. Hard work and a strong drive to succeed are non-negotiable.
For aspiring designers, I strongly recommend attending university to build a solid foundation. Beyond formal education, work experience is invaluable. During university, I completed three different internships, each providing a glimpse into the industry and allowing me to develop practical skills. These experiences gave me a competitive edge when entering the workforce.

Advice for Starting Your Own Fashion Brand
Launching a fashion brand is an exciting but challenging journey. To set yourself up for success, here are my key tips:
- Know Your Market
Identify your target audience. Who are you selling to? Develop a detailed customer profile that includes age, gender, profession, interests, hobbies, and shopping habits. This clarity will guide your design, marketing, and branding decisions. - Define Your Product
What will your brand specialize in? Whether it’s activewear, party dresses, loungewear, or casual staples, having a clear focus is crucial. Decide on your seasonal product range and price points, ensuring they align with your market’s expectations. - Establish a Strong Brand Identity
Your brand’s visual identity is its first impression. Think about the message you want to convey through your designs, website, and marketing materials. Social media platforms like Instagram can be excellent tools for curating and communicating this identity. - Budget Wisely
Starting a fashion brand requires a significant investment. Be prepared to allocate funds for design, production, marketing, and building a professional website. A well-thought-out budget will help you manage costs and maximize returns. - Visibility Is Key
No matter how fantastic your products are, they won’t sell if people can’t find you. Set up your brand on Instagram and Facebook even before launching, and use paid ads to increase visibility once you’re live. Research SEO, Google AdWords, and pay-per-click (PPC) strategies to drive traffic to your website. Additionally, collaborate with Instagram influencers to expand your reach. - Prioritize Quality Visuals
Your website and photography must look professional and polished. Customers often judge brands by their online presence, so invest in high-quality product photos and a sleek website design. Study your competitors to understand the industry standards and strive to exceed them.
A Reflection on My Journey
When I think about how far I’ve come since my first sewing project, it’s clear that pursuing fashion design was the right choice. From learning on a vintage Singer sewing machine to designing collections for top brands, my career has been a fulfilling adventure.
The industry has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying curious. Each project presents new challenges and opportunities to grow, and I’m grateful for every experience that has shaped me as a designer.
For anyone considering a career in fashion design, my advice is simple: stay true to your passion, be prepared to work hard, and never stop learning. The journey is not always easy, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.
If you’re thinking of starting your own brand, don’t let the challenges discourage you. With careful planning, creativity, and determination, you can create something truly remarkable. Remember, every great designer and brand started somewhere—let your vision guide you to success.
