Research & Product Direction
Before you start your collection, you need to have an in-depth knowledge of your target market . Research is fundamental to this and is a key element of all stages of the design process.
The research process helps me to generate an initial idea and take it all the way to the final design.
I would normally start with product direction from the client. This doesn’t have to be any fancy mood board but it does need to have either photos or sketches supported with written direction communicating your ideas. If you don’t already have this i can provide research and a moodboard but will need to know your customer profile or links to other brands that you aim to be similar to.
I would carry out research into current or future trends relevant to your brand and compile a theme. This might also require me to carry out further research once you have decided on your main theme.
Computer Aided Design
In the fashion industry, a Computer-aided design sketch (CAD sketch), also known as a flat sketch or technical flat, is a technical drawing of a garment that is laid flat to show design details. This is created on a design software that most proffesional designers use called Adobe Illustrator. A technical sketch is included in the Tech Pack to communicate to the factory the design, construction, and stitch details of your garment.
Tech Packs
Once you have received you Cad design, you will need a Tech Pack to send to your desired factory in order for them to make your garments . A fashion tech pack is a document provided to factories in the apparel and fashion industry. The document contains information on how to make, construct, and assemble garments. It serves as a ‘blueprint’ of sorts for the factory and ensures that each garment is made properly.
The fashion tech pack contains everything the factory needs to know in order to make a sample, and then produce the collection. It includes technical drawings, Fabric composition, Pantone colors, construction details, as well as reference images that explain how to make a garment.
A Tech Pack is important for reducing miscommunication between the various parties involved in making a garment, saving time and money, and improving efficiency.
Full Graded Size Specifications
Some Designers include size specifications in their tech packs but personally i have found that it is most efficient to provide this as a seperate document and is how most brands or suppliers opperate.
Grading specifications or grading specs are points of measure (POM) of each garment . The measurements indicates how much you want each size to change, by becoming larger or shrinking. This is created on Excel and can be created to any size ratio you desire for example XS-XL or size 6-20.
These will normally include the following basic points of measurements:
- Full garment length
- Chest
- Waist
- Hip
- Sleeve length
- Neck width
- Front neck drop
- Across shoulder
More complex garments will have more points of measurements. For a button up shirt, POM like collar stand width/length, collar width/length, button up placket length and width will need to be included.
